The essence of Spain fills the Cuvee Lounge each Thursday evening with incredible live Flamenco performances each month featuring Roger Gonzalez, special guitarist Kris Iwaniuk and dancing maestro Sebastian Sanchez enchanting us. Forget time and be seduced into a Spanish love affair.
About the artists:
The Roger Gonzalez Flamenco Trio joins three of Australia's best Flamenco Artists. Their captivating Flamenco performances have stunned audiences worldwide. A percussionist from Barcelona, Roger has toured Europe, Asia and Australia. Whilst living in Madrid, he worked with artists such as Piraña and Alain Perez. These artists currently play with the flamenco maestro and pioneer Paco de Lucia. Roger is a percussionist regularly performs with the Flamenco Fire company and at festivals around Australia.
Sebastian Sanchez is a renowned flamenco dancer from Seville, and has toured Europe, Russia and Australia and works with flamenco company Flamenco Fire. He is co-producer of De La Caña Flamenco company, and his dance career has continued to evolve with international artists such as Rafael Campallo,Manuel Betanzos, Andrés Peña, and Alejandro Granados to name a few.
Guitarist Kris Iwaniuk is an exceptional Flamenco guitarist having performed across Australia, Spain and the UK. Whilst in Spain he studied with some of Spain's top flamenco guitarists such as Manolo Sanlucar and Jeronimo Maya. Kris continually tours and performs at festivals around Australia.

Mark Henman Trio
The Mark Henman Trio is comprised of three of Brisbane's finest musicians; Mark Henman- drums, David Orr- guitar, Chris Pearson-bass. Playing chilled bossa, groove and jazz classics from the inspiration of Wes Montgomery, John Scofield, George Benson as well as original compositions the Mark Henman Trio is quality lounge at its finest.
Roger González Trio
Roger González Trio creates a smooth warm atmosphere to Cuvee with the finest Latin Jazz style. Leading with 3 congas, this trio has a strong cuban influence and is accompanied by Brisbane's best Classically trained Jazz musicians. As a Meinl Percussion Endorsee, having studied classical and contemporary percussion under Kevin Man (Karak Percussion). He continued his studies in La Havana, Cuba, studying under Adel González (Bebo Valdés, Chucho Valdés, Afro Cuban All-Stars, Irakére) and in Madrid with Latin Jazz artist Alain Perez (Celia Cruz, Jerry González, Paco de Lucia, Niño Josele, Enrique Morente) he is a specialist on congas.
Tangonya
Virtuoso button accordion player, Marko Deferri’s original interpretations explore the wide-ranging musical styles of tango, klezmer, gypsy and French swing music. Steeped in the traditions of their Eastern European cultures – yet Brisbane is the birthplace of Doyna Tangoyna, a collaboration of two internationally experienced instrumentalists who now call the city home. Marko has performed as a soloist with many ethnic folk bands as well as classical orchestras and, for more than a decade, was a professor of accordion at the Conservatory of Music in Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana. He began studying music at an early age under famous master accordionists, Zubitsky, Zajec and Biondini.
Marko plays a bespoke Italian Victoria accordion feted by virtuosos around the world. His repertoire extends from Bach, Mozart and Handel to contemporary music, traditional tango and piazzolla – a new style of jazz-inspired tango synonymous with composer Astor Piazzolla.
Rohan Somasekharan Trio
Rohan Somasekharan leads his trio with original compositions based in a classic Blue Note Jazz sound with Afro-Cuban, Soul, R&B, Funk, Brazilian, and Indian influences. Being a professional jazz pianist for 18 years, he is a hard swinging, soulful jazz man with a funky edge. Rohan has performed, worked and studied in London, New York, Sydney, Melbourne, Zurich, Durban and Cape Town, recently returned from South Africa where he performed with respected South African Jazz ensembles Bantu’s Clef and the George Mari Group. Rohan’s music compositions are not only influenced by great American Jazz Artists such as Herbie Hancock, Mulgrew Miller, Kenny Kirkland, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Duke Ellington, Bud Powell, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Branford Marsalis and Kenny Garrett but also draw from his cultural heritage of Sri-Lankan/Indian and Malaysian. His music combines Jazz, Funk, Blues, Brazil,Cuba and India which are not only original and innovative but also soulful in sound.
Dan Quigley Trio
Dan Quigley has been playing trumpet on the Brisbane jazz scene for over 10 years. Having played with Dale Barlow, James Morrison, Grace Knight, Anthony Warlow and has performed internationally in New York and Japan, the Noosa Jazz festival, Ambiwerra Food and Wine festival, Brisbane Powerhouse, Judith Wright Centre for Contemporary Arts,The Brisbane Jazz Club, QPAC, The Paris Cat (Melb), Sydney Opera House and many corporate functions and weddings. Dan’s performances include a fresh, lyrical interpretation of the great American songbook. Dan performs in his smooth swinging style on Trumpet and Vocals with traditional swing and forms the best of Brisbane's Classical Jazz ensembles.
The Satellites
With mix of soul, crispy new orleans funk, infectious latin and reggae rhythm n blues, and a pinch of jazz The Satellites are one of Australia's hottest bands right now. The Satellites are made up of four of Queensland's best musicians including David Orr guitar and vocals, Chris Pearson on bass and vocals, Anthony Aggs on keyboards and Mark Henman on drums. The Satellites play an assortment of classic and upbeats tunes with diverse genre backgrounds from Ray Charles, Poets of rhythm, Led Zeppelin, Roofus, John Scofield, as well as a handful of original music as well.
Jason Machado Group
The JASON MACHADO GROUP includes a diverse collection of musicians who themselves specialize in a variety of musical genres, bringing together a rich beauty to this group of popular Brazilian song. Massimo Sportelli – drums, Danielle Bentley – cello, Ashley Lewis – trombone, Claudio Climaco – Brazilian percussion and Jason Machado – voice and seven-string guitar. This unique combination of instrumentalists combines with voice and guitar to form the JASON MACHADO GROUP that will take you on a journey through the exotic world of MPB…Sweatband sweatband are comprised of the guitar talents of Lachlan Mitchell, the subsonic services of Stewart Barry and the beat keeping of Geoff Green. Playing music derived from sources as diverse as Nina Simone to Nintendo. Funk groove jazzesque with hats off to the P-funk off shoot of the same name. This trio is a rare outfit of solid gold music. Sofitel is the perfect backdrop for such talented artists.
Paris Dreaming
Paris Dreaming are Ewan Mackenzie and Kay Sullivan – playing acoustic guitar and accordion in French Gypsy Swing style, evoking the atmosphere of the Paris café scene of the 20 Century. Their music ranges from Musette Swing to Gypsy Jazz tunes, from American swing standards to their own self-penned compositions, which are melodic and evocative. Paris Dreaming has sold out Brisbane Powerhouse and lead the Brisbane Jazz Club several times over the past 5 years and regularly launches events for the Brisbane State Library, GOMA and QPAC. An evening with Ewan and Kay is a journey through some of the most romantic and delightful music ever written, played by virtuoso musicians with passionate intensity and dash of humour.
A classically trained jazz ensemble with a heavy African influence. John Reeves presents new arrangements of standards and rhythmic originals lead by piano. Inspirations include the music of Abdullah Ibrahim (a.k.a Dollar Brand) from South Africa, 'mbira' music from Zimbabwe and Kora music from Mali. And with the Saturday night DJ's generally its me - Bluesabelle .. Pepe Sol and Mike are on holiday until end of March - but I will give you at lease 2 weeks notice when they are next on..

Bluesabelle
Bluesabelle is best known for 50's Latin Jazz, Bebop Swing, Afro Cuban, Boogaloo, Funk, Salsa and Bossa Nova. In the past few years the flavors of Deep Soul, Cu Beat, Afro Rhythms, Exotic French, Caribbean and Nu Jazz have been the perfect compliment to her time-traveling sets. Playing records was a hobby she began in Amsterdam's favorite cocktail bars in 1996 and was so loved, Dj'ing has continued as her flavorsome specialty. Hosting a radio show “The Beat Lounge” in Amsterdam for Sunday nights on Kink FM, in the Fat Beats basement interviewing many of her favorite recorded Artists such as Lou Donaldson, Al Green, Bob James, Yuseff Latif, Herbie Hankock, Marleana Shaw and many more before returning to Australia with a clear vision to bring the soul of jazz back to clubbing. Having held residencies in most of Queensland and Australia’s elite venues since then and frequented some of the most prestigious cocktail bars and lounges around the world with her unique style and simple love of music. Bluesabelle was crowned the "Nova Lounge Queen” in the Philippines, has featured on Asia MTV, DJ’d for the Brooklyn International Film Festival, spun for many a Fashion week, played fine Jazz for London’s Ministry of Sound radio show, featured Fiplees in Goa India, held residencies in Barcelona and NYC lushest venues, she is continually setting new foundations for atmosphere, creating unforgettable nights of sexiness.
Pepe Sol
On a journey that extends past the regions of this continent, DJ Pepe Sol has taken himself to the deep and dark corners of South America to indulge in the music of Brazil. His flow is smooth and passion derives from the latin sound of jazz and dance, focusing on the Swing side of Samba – the street style music of Brazil mixed with Cuban Jazz and Soul Lounge Beats. Plenty of rhythm, plenty of soul and timeless classic Boogie breaks to take you away for a night of play.
Mike Ford
DJ Mike Ford began playing records in the early 90's playing rare groove funk and soul which he continues to play today. Spinning vinyl in many clubs and bars and festivals throughout the UK - London Brighton and Bournemouth (jazz juice)before heading to Australia. Suited for the finest venues, Mike Ford specializes in rare groove and cocktail lounge jazz and funk, brazilian, having held an impressive residency at The Bowery and frequently plays the Press Club, Larouche, Rumpus Lychee Lounge, Cloudland and Glass bar. He has supported Snowboy, Russ Dewberry and other industry greats, nu jazz, latin, brazilian and future funk is what he tasty specialty.
